John R. Stanley Sr., 84, of Winston-Salem, died Monday (June 7th) at the Forsyth Medical Center. Born in Surry County, Mr. Stanley retired after twenty nine years as a salesman with P. Lorillard Tobacco Company. He served honorably in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the Philippine Islands.
Mr. Stanley was predeceased by his parents Eugene Solomon and Mary Lee (Coe) Stanley and his wife Helen Banner Stanley. Surviving family includes his daughter Judy Stanley Cardwell of Winston-Salem; son John R. (Johnny) Stanley Jr. and his wife Pat of Durham; granddaughter Tiffany Martin and husband Brad of Statesville; brother Bill T. Stanley and wife Peggy of Winston-Salem, twin brother Jim G. Stanley and wife Faye of Dobson; sisters Mary Cole of Mt. Airy and Kay Smith of Lewisville; several nieces and nephews; and his companion Geneva Terry of Winston-Salem.
His hobbies included collecting and repairing used cars. Mr. Stanley enjoyed Blue Grass music and was a gifted “banjo picker.”
The family will visit with their friends on Thursday (June 10th) from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Vogler Funeral Home Reynolda Chapel, 2951 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem (336-722-6106). A funeral service celebrating his life will be conducted on Friday (June 11th) 11:00 AM at the Vogler Funeral Home Reynolda Chapel. Burial will follow, including full military honors, at the Double Creek Church of Christ Cemetery, Rockford (Surry County).
