Winston-Salem- Mr. John Sparks Purvis, Jr., loving husband, father and grandfather, 84, died at his residence April 1, 2013 surrounded by his family. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Thursday, April 4 at Parkway Presbyterian Church with Reverend Dan Wilkers officiating. The family will receive guests following the service.
John was born one of ten children in Birmingham, AL to the late Mr. & Mrs. John S. and Otice Brookins Purvis, Sr. After graduating from high school he began his forty-five year career with Kraft Foods. He served our country in the US Army during the Korean War. He married Katherine James and has spent sixty four wonderful years together. He was a golf fanatic and could be found most of the time at Long Creek Golf Club. If he wasn’t golfing he enjoyed working in his yard and spending time with his family. He was a positive out- going person who enjoyed story telling.
Surviving Mr. Purvis are his wife, Katherine J. Purvis of the home; children, John M. Purvis of Candler, Suzanne P. Shay (Robert) of Winston-Salem and David J. Purvis (Amanda) of Holly Springs; granddaughter, Ashleigh Purvis; brothers, James D. Purvis (Janice) of Theodore, AL and Melvin E. Purvis (Frances) of Morris, AL; sister, Norma P. Quick of Crane Hill, AL; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
