He was born in Winston-Salem on November 20, 1940 to the late Addison David and Bessie Burton Stonestreet Matthews.
From a young age, Jerry wanted to be in the funeral business. He devoted 37 years to cemetery and funeral service. Jerry was a graduate of the National Funeral Foundation of Funeral Service and the School of Funeral Service Management. He began working for Vogler Funeral Homes in 1962. Jerry was a licensed funeral director beginning in 1969. He has been associated with Yancey Funeral Service since its inception. His proudest accomplishment was designing and completing Parklawn Memorial Gardens in 1972. Jerry retired from the funeral industry in 1998.
He was a true family man. Jerry looked forward to spending all the time he could with them. He always looked forward to his trips to the Tennessee Mountains with family.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his first wife, Toni Brewer Matthews. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 26 years, Pat Chrisawn Matthews; children, Sonya Matthews (Ed) Withers and Darren Neal Matthews; step-daughter, Tracie (Jeffrey) Voletto; grandchild, Becky Withers (Avery) Gurney, Victoria Voletto, Erica Holloway, and Quinton Matthews; great granddaughter, Amy Elizabeth Gurney; and sister, Vickie White.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, October 2nd at 2pm at Parklawn Memorial Gardens in the mausoleum chapel.
In lieu of flowers, Jerry’s family has requested donations be made directly to Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
