Mr. Barbee was born January 31, 1925 in Lumberton, a son to the late, Fredrick and Helen Moore Barbee. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Barbee, and four brothers, Hudson, Russell, Robert, and Walter Barbee.
Chuck was a member of College Park Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher of the Poole-Barbee Class, and a member of the choir using his amazing voice singing bass. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps during WWII, and fought courageously in the Battle of Iwo Jima by delivering fellow marines to the shoreline and evacuating wounded. Chuck and other local Iwo Jima survivors formed the Iwo Jima Survivors Association in 1995 and Chuck served as president of that organization for 17 years. He retired for Western Electric after nearly 30 years of service. Chuck was an avid golfer, enjoyed traveling, and enjoyed staying in shape at the YMCA.
He is survived by two sons, Alan Barbee and wife, Karen of Florence, SC and Mark Barbee and wife, Catherine of Spring City, PA; five grandchildren, Jenna Barbee of Chapel Hill, NC, Brian Barbee of Greenville, SC, Matthew Barbee of Philadelphia, PA, Maegan Barbee of Philadelphia, PA, and Mallory Barbee of Spring City, PA.
A funeral service will be held 2:30 PM, Sunday, December 27th at College Park Baptist Church with Rev. Ramon Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:30 PM prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow with military honors at Forsyth Memorial Park.
