He was born July 19, 1935 in St. Paul, MN to George and Myrtle Sheperd Kahl. He is survived by his wife, of 58 years, Mary Jo, his four children; Randi Kahl, Henry (Kimberly) Kahl, Jennifer (Sean) Kelly, and Jacqueline (Gregg) Boyd; his five grandchildren; Matthew and Amanda Kahl, Tyler Kelly, and Brady and Grant Boyd; his brother, Howard Kahl (wife Orla) and many other relatives and friends.
George proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps for 3 years. He serviced in the Korean Conflict. After his service, he sought his education beginning at Drake University and continuing at University of Wisconsin at Menomonie where he was a member of Epsilon Pi Tau Academic Fraternity. He received his BA in Vocational Education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout and followed on to receive his Master’s Degree in Education from UNC Greensboro.
He developed and established the Diesel Program at Forsyth Technical Community College. He was an instructor for 22 years and served as the Dean of Engineering Technology for ten years. He was instrumental in the writing of ASE Standards for Diesel, which are used throughout the US today. George also spent 32 years as a Small Engine Instructor for the community college. He was an educator, inventor, and business owner. As a business owner, George operated KLW Enterprises where he was a co-inventor of an over the road sleep system. He owned F&G Small Engine Repair for 20 years in the Ardmore Neighborhood.
A funeral mass will take place Saturday, January 28th at 11 am at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 1730 Link Rd. A Celebration of Life will take place immediately following the service at Frank Vogler & Sons Funeral Home, 2951 Reynolda Rd, at 12:30pm.
