Mrs. Frances Stewart Goss

Frances Stewart Goss, 88, of Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, died Thursday, July 14, 2011. She was born July 24, 1922 in Galax, Virginia to Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Truitt. Frances was active in the church throughout her life and had been a member of First Baptist Church in Galax, First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, Pfafftown Baptist Church in Pfafftown and Ardmore Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She joined the U.S. Navy W.A.V.E.S. in 1943 and actively served until 1945. She was a loving mother and sister, devoted wife, and generous volunteer to many organizations including Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, American Red Cross and adult literacy programs. She was known for her optimism, good humor, courage, curiosity and unconditional loyalty.

Mrs. Goss was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul W. Stewart, her second husband, Rev. McPherson “Mack” Goss, a sister, Ruth Elizabeth and a brother, Philip. She is survived by three sons: Steve Stewart and his wife, Julie, of Atlanta, Fred Stewart and his partner, Jimmy, of Efland, Greg Stewart and his wife, Amee, of Asheboro; a sister: Nancy Seaver of Richmond, Virginia; two grandchildren: Martha Hunter of Atlanta and Tahra Porterfield of Atlanta; two great-grandchildren: Emma Porterfield and Finn Hunter of Atlanta. Frances was also very close to the Goss family: son: Miller Goss and his wife, Libby, of Socorro, New Mexico; daughter Mary Nell of Morganton; grandchildren Kate Goss of Washington, D.C. and Andrew Goss and his wife, Pax, of New Orleans, Louisiana; two great-grandchildren: Sage and Galen Goss of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 23 at 10 a.m. at Frank Vogler & Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Road with a visitation Friday, July 22 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Burial will be at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in the form of donations to the American Red Cross, 690 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27106.
