Dr. Charles Harris Powell

March 28, 1930 – August 2, 2015

Charles Harris Powell, formally of Mars Hill, North Carolina passed away peacefully at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston Salem, NC after a period of declining health. He was a much loved and respected husband, father, and physician.

He received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Medical Degree at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa and was a member of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity.

He served in the US Navy as a Medical Officer at the Naval Hospital, Quantico, Va. He was a devoted and caring Family Practitioner for over 40 years serving Western North Carolina and Daytona Beach, Florida. He was a faculty member of Mars Hill College, Director of the Madison County Health Department, and served on numerous boards and community programs in North Carolina and Florida. His zest for life, quick wit and optimism will be missed.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Johanne Phillips Powell of Advance, NC; daughter Suzanne Powell Hess (Mark) of Clemmons, NC; son Jeffrey Scott Powell (Allison) of Greenville, SC; brother William Ernest Powell Jr. (Francis) of Mars Hill, NC; Grandchildren Jaclyn Hess Spagnola (Joe), Hannah Alyse Hess, Justin Powell Hess, Reid Caroline Powell and Layton Fuller Powell.

A celebration of his life will be held at Clemmons United Methodist Church August 5, 2015 at 11am. Family will receive friends after the service. A private burial will be held at a later date at West Memorial Gardens, Weaverville, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kate B.
