Carl Leon Stewart, age 92 years, died peacefully on Monday, November 5, 2018, at home surrounded by family. He was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, on October 13, 1926, to Posey L. Stewart and Lily Gray Stewart, the youngest of six siblings. He was in the U. S. Navy from March 1944 to June 1946, serving as an aircraft mechanic. On February 4, 1950, he was married to Marie Harris Stewart, the love of his life. He worked for American Optical Company until 1967 at which time he founded Salem Optical Company in Winston-Salem. He and his wife and friends enjoyed travel for several years after his retirement in 1990. He was a loyal member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marie; three children, Lynne Stewart, Anne Skulskie (Martin), and Amy Bowden (Edwin). He was a grandpa to six wonderful grandchildren: Dianne Atta (Maher), Laura Landers (Milton), Jeffrey Stewart (Ashley Martinez), Weston Edwards (Jessi Stancil), Alayna Poole (Dalton Elmore), Ciarra Poole; and six great-grandchildren: Zaid, Mazen, and Ramzee Atta; Zoe Rush; Brodie Poole; and Vada Edwards; special longtime friends: Don and Norma Whitaker, Faye Craddock, Joyce Trenor. So many friends, nieces, nephews were important to Carl.
A memorial service will be held on November 17, 2018 at 1pm at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 2574 Parkway Drive, Winston-Salem. The service will be officiated by Father Steve Rice. He will be interred at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to St. Timothy’s. Visitation with the family will be immediately after the service.
