Barbara Lee Smith died peacefully on Sunday, February 27 at Bermuda Commons where she had been a resident for several months. The family will receive friends at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church on Thursday, March 3 at 11 a.m. The funeral will follow immediately at noon on Thursday. There will be a private family burial at another location.
Ms. Smith was born June 4, 1924 and lived 86 years. Ms. Smith graduated from James A. Gray High School and Guilford College as an honor student. Upon graduation from college she worked at the Winston-Salem police department for a number of years. Later she was employed at the State Department in Washington, D.C., and then she served several years with the State Department in Tehran, Iran. After returning to the United States, she worked at Western Electric and retired after a number of years. She was a member of the American Association of University Women. After her retirement she was a guide at MESDA until her health failed.
Ms. Smith was an active member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church and volunteered in the church offices. Ms. Smith is survived by her sister Mary Ellen Clodfelter and husband Jake. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Edna Lee Smith and Jean Smith. Ms. Smith is survived by two nieces: Barbara Ellen Spritz and Kathy Smith and seven nephews: Bryant Smith, Keith Smith, Donnie Smith, Randy Smith, Dave Clodfelter, Jeff Clodfelter, and Harvey Clodfelter. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Frank Vogler & Sons on Reynolda Rd.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Carmel Methodist Church, 4625 Ebert Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
