It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Louise (Vogler) Hurdle on November 14, 2024, at the age of 68. Barbara was born on June 9th, 1956 in Cleveland, OH, to the late Walter and Lois (Vicha) Vogler.
Barbara was known for her strong will, unwavering determination, and love and support for her family, church and community. Along with her beloved husband, Ben, she was a devout member of The Presbyterian Church USA, and later Hillsdale United Methodist Church in Advance, NC .
Barbara attended Otterbein College where she received her Bachelors of Arts in Theater and Sociology. She then went to earn her Master’s of Education in Counseling at the University of Maryland College Park. After Graduate school Barbara worked as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor at Maryland Rehabilitation Center.
Barbara’s selfless and giving spirit can perhaps best be seen in her absolute dedication to her children. Shortly after becoming a mother, Barbara chose to leave her hard earned career staying home to raise her children. She was a path setter in her unconventional choices to nurse and homeschool her three children. She also assisted other mothers and families navigate these rocky paths through her work as a leader with La Leche League and then through founding and leading the Educating Our Own homeschooling group. Barbara believed strongly in the importance of fostering a lifelong love of learning and enabling children to reach their full potential. She chose to share this love with her students and fellow educators at Glenn High School in Kernersville, NC working as an English teacher from 2003 until retiring in 2021. After retiring, she continued to show her deep love and dedication to education by joining The P.E.O. Sisterhood-Philanthropic Educational Organization working to empower women through education.
Throughout her life she was an active member of her church leading youth groups, bible studies, vacation bible school, and serving on mission teams near and abroad. She sponsored multiple children through Compassion International and even became a Foster Parent.
Barbara loved traveling. In college, she did a semester at sea and later served as a leader, with Ben, on several EF educational tours taking students from Glenn HS to Italy, Greece, France, England, Spain and China. She and Ben also traveled to 49 out of the 50 States visiting multiple National Parks along the way.
One of the greatest joys of Barbara’s life was creating memories with her grandchildren. She spent many days sharing her love of baking, singing, reading and hiking with them. Barbara was a devoted wife, loving mother, and adoring grandmother. She will be missed by many but her light will live on in those she loved.
She leaves behind her husband of 43 years, Benjamin Theodore Hurdle III; children, Caitlin (John) Darr, Douglas Hurdle, and Margaret (Brandon) Lindstrom; grandchildren, Jacob, Mason, and Emma Darr, and Wynnona Lindstrom; brothers, Edward (Debbie) Vogler and Kenneth (Sue) Vogler; sister-in-law, Anne (Jon) Coakley; numerous nieces and nephews; dogs, Sadie and Teagan; along with countless friends who felt her warmth and generosity.
