ALLBRITTON, MARGARET ESTES (“Peggy”, “Gram”) 93, of Clearwater, entered into Eternity peacefully on Wednesday, December 15th. She was born on June 13, 1927 to Henson and Margaret Estes in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where her grandfather, Brigadier General George H. Estes, Jr. served as Commander of U.S. Troops. When her father was offered a promotion in New York City by Singer Manufacturing Company following his role as Director of Sales in South America, she and family moved to Glen Ridge, NJ in the mid/late 1930s. In 1947, she graduated from Sullins College, in Bristol, VA with a degree in Secretarial Studies.
She met the love of her life, the late Judge Owen S. Allbritton III, while in Clearwater visiting relatives. Their first “blind date” took place at the iconic Clearwater Beach landmark, the Palm Pavilion. She eventually relocated to Clearwater where she worked at radio station WTAN as their in-house “Hollywood gossip” commentator. She married Owen in 1949 and accompanied him to Gainesville where he studied Law at The University of Florida. While in Gainesville, she worked at the UF Registrar Department and was selected by the John Powers Modeling Agency to the 1949 UF Homecoming Court. Peggy ultimately enjoyed 60 years married to Owen while having raised four children. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and yes, great-great grandmother! She was a longtime member of the First
United Methodist Church of Clearwater, Casado Club, Carlouel Yacht Club and Belleair Country Club. She was also an active member of the Clearwater Historical Society, Daughters of American Revolution, Les E’tudiants and the Clearwater Aquarium. Peggy was an avid tennis player, enjoyed amateur photography, and was a yoga enthusiast (even in her advanced years!). She will always be remembered by her grace, elegance, charm and by her overflowing inward and outward beauty. Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Owen. She is survived by her brother, Richard H. Estes and by her four children, David E. Allbritton (Maryhelen), Patricia A. Chatleain, Mary Barnett (Paul) and Steven Allbritton (Cindy); 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. A private family ceremony will be held December 23 at Sylvan Abbey in Clearwater. The family requests that donations in her memory may be made to First United Methodist Church of Clearwater. www.sylvanabbey.com
