Lilly (Lil) Sherman, 91, of Largo, Florida, passed away unexpectedly due to natural causes Saturday August 19, 2017, at Largo's Morton Plant Hospital. She was born Lilly Louisa Maria Ullman on June 17, 1926 in the Quinsigamond Village neighborhood of Worcester, MA, to the late Carl and Gerda Ullman. Lil married the late William (Bill) Sherman on March 31, 1951 and, with patience and love, created the warmest, most nurturing home imaginable for her husband and 2 sons in their ranch-style house at 17 Maranook Rd, Worcester, MA. This would be the family home for the next 45 years and the place Lil’s and Bill’s extended families and many friends would frequently gather, cookout, and play together in celebration of birthdays, Mother's and Father's Days, and many other holidays and special occasions. Lil is survived by her 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Sherman and Laura Hungerford, and Craig Sherman and Louisa Barnes, 5 grandsons, Benjamin, Samuel, William, Gerad and Jacen Sherman, 5 nieces, 2 nephews and countless friends she has made over her 91 years, especially at the East Bay Oaks (EBO) Retirement Community, Largo, FL where she resided full-time for the last 24 years following the death of her soulmate, Bill, in 1993. After graduating from Worcester’s Commerce High School, Lil worked briefly in the transcribing office at Norton Company in Worcester. She then became a dental assistant in the Park Building in downtown Worcester, eventually returning to Norton to work in the company's Employment Office. Lil continued to work until she married, started a family and became a full-time homemaker. When the boys were young, Lil and Bill were active in PTA at Burncoat Elementary school (now Burncoat Street Preparatory School) and at Greendale People's Church where they were in the congregation's Couple’s Club, served as children’s Sunday school teachers and organized annual Sunday School picnics hosted at their home. She and Bill were involved in supporting Boy Scout Troop 25 which both sons were active in for many years. Lil remained a full-time mom and homemaker until the boys' became teens when she returned to working outside the home as office manager for Hahnemann Anesthesia Associates, Inc., a position she would hold for 20 years. Lil enjoyed reading, singing (especially hymns), traveling, computer games (especially Tetris and Spider Solitaire), playing cards, and helping others. Just 2 weeks before she passed Lil could be seen riding her bike with her close friend BJ or doing her daily exercises with the ‘girls’ in the East Bay Oaks pool. Famous for her innocently told, nearly always G-rated, and more often than not corny "Lil jokes", Lil was at once described as a treasure, a genuine angel and a real pistol. Lil found joy not in accumulating things but in meeting new people, developing caring relationships and helping others. It was a rare flight or bus ride that she did not make a friend out of a complete stranger who happened to be seated beside her. She served on the Board of the East Bay Oaks Home Owners Association and was a member of the Eeast Bay Oakes liaison Committee. She was a long-time supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and St Jude Children’s hospital. Since March of 2016, Lil was living with, and lovingly cared for by, her East Bay Oaks-resident niece, Janice Wohlhaupter. Another niece, Wendy Copeland and her husband Sam, and her great nephew Michael Wohlhaupter and his wife Trudi, all also East Bay Oaks residents, were always there to help Lil when needed. With family by her side and her vast network of friends in the park and beyond, there was no better place than East Bay Oaks for Lil to enjoy her golden years. In lieu of flowers, Lil asked that gifts in her memory be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. In lieu of a traditional funeral and visitation, Lil allowed that those who loved her might gather for a memorial service at the East Bay Oaks Retirement Community Club House (601 Starkey Rd, Largo, FL 33771. A memorial service followed by reception will be held from 4-6pm on Saturday November 4, 2017 at the East Bay Oaks retirement community Club House, 601 Starkey Rd, Largo FL 33771. Lil’s most common refrain: "I’ve been so lucky, there must be an angel looking out for me!"
