Joy Mildred Crandall of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away on Monday, December 26, 2022, at 89 years old at AccentCare Hospice in Largo, FL. Joy was born on July 17, 1933, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, to Arthur and Mildred Bassett. She attended Nepean High School while working at her father's auto shop in Stittsville before commencing a lifelong career with Delta Airlines.
Joy married the late Gordon MacDonnell on June 20, 1953. With their son, Lee MacDonnell, they moved to Montreal in 1966 for the beginning of her career as a reservation agent with Northeast Airlines and then transferred to Boston in 1969 as an Operations Manager. In 1972 Northeast Airlines was acquired by Delta Airlines. In 1984 she moved to Sarasota, FL, to assume the position of Assistant Station Manager for Delta at Tampa International Airport. She was promoted to Station Manager, where she stayed until her retirement in 1997. She was proud to be one of the industry's first female station managers. She spent many years traveling and volunteering during her retirement.
In 2007 she met and married Rick Crandall. Together they continued to travel the world while cruising, flying, and RV'ing. Joy supported Rick in building a local radio station, WMTB-LP, 96.7 FM, in St Petersburg, FL. Joy and Rick formed a non-profit corporation in Florida, Music Tampa Bay Inc. for the purposes of obtaining the FCC license for the station. Rick managed technical operations while Joy managed business and financial details, including annual IRS filings and preparing reports for the board of directors. Licensing and operations where all transferred to another local non-profit in early 2021.
Joy is predeceased by her first husband, Gordon MacDonnell. She is survived by her husband, Rick Crandall, brother Don Bassett (Adele), son Lee MacDonnell (Lisa), Grandson Chase MacDonnell, Granddaughter Emma MacDonnell, Stepson Robert Crandall (Elise)
Thank you to the staff at Accent Care Hospice. Final services will be at the Bay Pines Veterans Cemetery to be determined. Donations can be made in her memory to Casa Women's Shelter in St. Petersburg.
