In 1995 I was hired right out of graduate school to help found a new community college in the Houston area. I would be the only full-time chemist for several years and entirely responsible for the chemistry curriculum. It was one of the most difficult tasks I have ever faced, especially since it was my first-time teaching several of the courses offered. For various reasons, the faculty at the other colleges in the system refused to offer us any help. Jose was the one exception. He reached out to me and offered invaluable assistance and advice in developing our curriculum. He had a remarkable talent for pedagogy and curriculum design. The lab experiments he wrote and shared were of such quality that I used several of them for the rest of my career. Jose’s advice helped me to navigate the thorny world of academic politics. I cannot think of anyone who had a greater influence on my professional development. I sometimes wonder if I would have survived those early years without him. 

But Jose was not only a colleague. I have never had a more loyal friend. I have so many memories. Conversations with Jose were always entertaining and thought-provoking because he was so well-read and knowledgeable. I always marveled at his mechanical skills. One day he poked his head under the hood of my car and straightened out problems that could have left me stranded. I’ll never forget the times he took me sailing. I am so fortunate to have known Jose Barreto and I am a better person as a result. I will deeply miss him.

Jose was  graceful, patient, and humane, qualities that made him a trusted and valued colleague. He was instrumental in building so many "firsts" at Florida Gulf Coast University, and his work there still remains impactful and transformative. His students, too, have benefited from his mentorship. I will miss his gentle humor and equanimity, which came from a depth of spirit and genuine wisdom. I am grateful our paths crossed. My most sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Patty, you and Jose will always be in  our thoughts.  We will remember your visit with Jose to our home.  We all talked for hours and visited Letchworth State Park,  Niagara Falls, Erie Basin Marina, Alden School, Buffalo VA Medical Center Laboratory and Tim Horton's for a great cup of coffee.

Jose was my friend and one of the finest men I have ever known or will know. He was a great teacher and a free thinker. He was a fine father and adored his wife. He was a constant source of wisdom and served to bring together all around him. He will be missed.

I have so many great memories of Jose as we were growing up.  Some of my favorites were ones centered around Jose trying to convince me that he was my favorite of all the cousins. We would even have cooking contests where he and Delmi would cook and Jack and I would vote for our favorite cook. I always voted for Delmi and Jack for Jose so it was always a tie.  Secretly, I often preferred Jose’s steak but of course, would never share that.  Loved all the Sunday meals we shared  when he joined us at our house on Bass St while he was attending USF. More recently, during the Pandemic, Jose would often reach out to plan a picnic lunch or get together. These photos were from one of those memorable get together.  I love you and will miss you my dear primo!  I will always remember your smile and gentle and kind spirit. Until we meet again 💜
