James F. Baker Sr., of Clearwater, Florida, formerly of Central Square, New York, passed away at home on January 13, 2024. Jim was born on April 15, 1946, to Charlotte and Lyle Baker, in Hornell, NY. He graduated from Phelps High School and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from SUNY Oswego.
Jim’s teaching career spanned 31 years at Paul V. Moore High School in Central Square, where he was active in the teachers’ union and coached tennis in his early years. After his retirement in 2001, he began spending more time in the place he loved, Clearwater, where he moved full-time in 2009. Over the years, Jim enjoyed playing golf, traveling, listening to music, debating politics, and watching sports (particularly his beloved Phillies). Most of all, Jim loved spending time with friends and family and was well known for his generosity.
Jim is survived by his son James (Jennifer) Baker Jr. of Naples, FL, his daughter Margaret (Sam) Formica of Syracuse, NY, and his four grandchildren, Julia (Kaela), Matthew, Charlotte, and Lauren. He is also survived by his sister Julie (Robert) Santoro of Delmar, NY, his former wife Rosemary Baker, and several nieces and nephews. Jim will also be missed by his good friend Cathy Teegardin and all his friends at Coco’s (formerly Cooters). Jim was predeceased by his parents and his sister Leslee Fite.
A party to honor and remember Jim will be held at Coco’s Crush Bar North Beach in Clearwater Beach, FL on Tuesday, February 13th, 2024, from 11 am – 2 pm. All family and friends are welcome.
