George Packer Sampson, 95, of Clearwater Beach, passed away October 17, 2010. Mr. Sampson was born in Birdsboro, PA Sept. 2, 1915. Following graduation from Allentown Prep School in 1936, he moved to Washington, DC to attend George Washington University and work at the home office of Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Company, where he became Vice President of Marketing. During the 20 years at Acacia, he served in the Army Air Corp, Class 43-D and retired from the USAF Reserve after 33 years, September 2, 1975 as Lt. Colonel.
In 1944, Mr. Sampson attended the Harvard University Graduate School of Business and is also a graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
In 1954 he established the George P. Sampson Agency, Inc. in Washington, DC, which is still operating today.
A life member of the Air Force Assoc., a 25 year member of the Metropolitan Washington Board of Trade, life member of the Retired Officers Assoc., Trail Blazer National Assoc. of Underwriters, President of DC – Rock Creek Lions Club, Post Commander American Legion DC Post 59, Clearwater Chapter, S.A.R. 50 year member, VFW Post, Oceanview, DE, Boling Field Officers Club, DC, MacDill Air Force Officers Club, Belleair Country Club, life member of Army-Navy Country Club, Arlington, VA, and former member Kenwood Country Club, Bethesda, MD. Mr. Sampson was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Largo.
Mr. Sampson is survived by his wife, Dorie; 4 children, George P. Sampson, III of Allentown, PA; Robert B. Sampson of Merritt Island, FL; Joan S. Cupic of Houston, TX; James T. Sampson of Mt. Pleasant, SC; 2 step-sons, Ted Nohren of Treasure Island, FL; Joe Nohren of Sarasota, FL; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Thursday 3PM-4PM with a service at 4PM at the funeral home, 693 S. Belcher Rd, Clearwater, FL 33764.
