David was born on January 3, 1968, in Brookings, South Dakota to David and JoAnne Roby. The family initially moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and later moved to Clearwater, Florida, where David graduated from high school in 1986. During his high school years, he enjoyed being a member of several school bands and he was proud to have earned his Eagle Scout rank, along with his membership in the Order of the Arrow.
In 1990, David graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science in Finance, Cum Laude. During his time at FSU, he enjoyed playing saxophone with the Marching Chiefs and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, serving as an officer. In 1993, David earned his Juris Doctor, Cum Laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law, where he was a member of the Georgia Law Review and Order of the Coif. In addition, in 1994, David earned his Masters of Laws in Taxation from the University of Florida Levin College of Law.
Before joining Eversheds Sutherland as an associate in the Tax Practice group in 1996, David served as an attorney-advisor to the Honorable Carolyn P. Chiechi of the United States Tax Court. In 2009, David was promoted to partner with Eversheds Sutherland. He was a well-respected tax advisor to national and multinational companies and partnerships.
In 2001, David married Loretta Jo Finger. In 2005, David and Loretta were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Gabriella (Gabby) and Rebecca (Becky). David was a devoted husband and father, spending many afternoons and weekends on the lacrosse field or cooking and grilling at home with his family. He was an accomplished chef and wine connoisseur. David loved cheering on the Florida State Seminoles, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. David also was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Vienna, VA.
David was a kind and generous person who loved his family deeply. David is survived by his wife, Loretta, his two daughters, Gabby and Becky, of Vienna, VA; his mother, JoAnne Roby, of Dunedin, FL, his sister, Mari DeMauro (Scott) of Safety Harbor, FL, three nephews and one niece, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. David’s father, David Roby, preceded him in death.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2021, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a prayer service and rosary, at Sylvan Abbey in Clearwater, FL. The funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 9, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Espiritu Santo Catholic Church in Safety Harbor, FL. A memorial Mass and Celebration of Life reception also is being planned for the first week of August in Vienna, VA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bishop O’Connell High School – Crew Team (Arlington, VA) or to Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School – Black Women’s Society (Washington, DC).
