area. Born in Port Jefferson, N.Y. and raised in Clearwater, he graduated from Clearwater High School,
Class of ‘78. He was preceded in death by his father, James “Jim” Kinne; and his brother, Peter “Pete”
Kinne. David is survived by his mother, Elaine “Lonnie” Kinne; son, Benjamin “Ben” Kinne; sister, Beth
Kinne Friederich; and niece, Rachael Friederich. David Kinne was a former stand-up comedian, biologist,
educator and corporate trainer. His passion for the ocean and marine life led him to a career at
Clearwater Marine Aquarium. He was a master storyteller whose live, interactive version of Captain
Tortuga entertained and educated children visiting the aquarium.
David was a member of the Clearwater High swim team that won a State Championship. After high
school, David attended Emory University where he received his bachelor’s degree in Biology. He was
awarded a full ride PhD Research Scholarship in Developmental Neurobiology. While in college, David
was a member of the Rathskeller Comedy Troupe. This experience led David to become a stand-up
comedian, headlining across the country and appearing on Comedy Club-The Punchline Live. Following
his days in comedy, David spent time as Director of Training at Innovex, Account Director at Blue Diesel
and Teacher at East Lake High School before becoming Director of Guest Engagement & HR Training at
Clearwater Marine Aquarium. While working at the Aquarium, David authored a children’s book titled
‘Captain Tortuga and The Treasure of Sand Key’, illustrated by Kotopoulis. In his own words “This is the first children’s book he has written, although he has read several.”
