Frederick “Fred” R. Cleaver, Sr., 76, of Egypt, passed away Friday, April 21, 2023 at his home after a lengthy battle with a rare form of kidney cancer. He was surrounded and comforted by his loving family.
He was born December 8, 1946 in Clearfield, the son of Ray G. and Myrtle A. (Ogden) Cleaver.
Fred was a graduate of Clearfield Area High School.
He served in the United States Army National Guard during the Vietnam Era.
Fred was a member of the Church of Christ and the NRA.
He was a machinist by trade, working for several local businesses including Clearfield Machine, Berg Electronics, Foradora and Smitchko Tool and Die. While Fred was a machinist most of his life, he also started a small business, Fred’s Sharp-All-Shop, later expanding and combining a larger business known as Lynch Knife Grinding Services, providing various sharpening services to many paper and lumber companies. Fred was a skilled master of his trade.
Despite working many hours, Fred also made time for many adventures traveling and vacationing with his family. A long fall weekend relaxing on a Delaware beach with Esther easily topped the list. Over the years, he enjoyed a variety of other activities, such as; square dancing, weightlifting and various outdoor activities. Of those, Fred especially enjoyed running. For many years, he could be seen running up the bypass during his lunch breaks wearing denim jeans and his steel toed boots.
On December 21, 1965, Fred married his high school sweetheart, Esther D. Graham and they built a wonderful life together. He is survived by his wife, three children; Wendy Norwood (Brian) of Lolo, MT, Frederick R. Cleaver, Jr., (Christine) of Egypt and Scott Cleaver (Kristi Schuft) of Spearfish, SD, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, a sister, Sandra Tkacik of Clearfield, a number of nieces and nephews and 24 grand-pups.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Deanna Shugarts and a nephew, Darin Tkacik.
Funeral Services will be held at the Bennett and Houser Funeral Home, Inc. of Clearfield on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Brenda Libreatori officiating. Interment will be in Bradford Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the hour of services.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Nathaniel D. Yingling Cancer Center, 815 Doctors Drive, Clearfield, PA 16830 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
