Born at home on April 19, 1926 in Mayport, PA; a son of the late Don W. Stewart and Margaret E. (Jones) Stewart. Don grew up on a farm in Mayport PA, with his three brothers and three sisters. After graduating high school in 1944, Don joined the Navy during WW2 and was trained as a Pharmacist Mate. At the end of the war, Don was transferred to Bethesda Naval Hospital to work in the hospital pharmacy. Upon being discharged from the Navy, he returned to Pennsylvania and married his beautiful sweetheart Alma Vera Crawford who lived on the farm next door. Alma and Don moved to Pittsburgh in 1947 where Don attended the University of Pittsburgh majoring in Pharmacy. Shortly after graduation, Don was employed by Merck. He held many different positions at Merck Sharp & Dohme and was ultimately transferred to their International Division located in Rahway, N.J. While at the International Division, Don traveled to many parts of the world for Merck.
In 1976 Don left Merck and purchased City Drug Store in Curwensville PA. For the next 32 years, he practiced pharmacy and owned several businesses.
He was an active member of the Christian Alliance Church in Clearfield and taught Sunday School for years. Don was also extremely active with Gideon’s International and was the local association’s President for 5 years.
Don and Alma recently celebrated 72 years of marriage on September 6, 2018. He is survived by his wife along with five children, seven grandchildren, and four siblings; Children - Don Stewart of Tyrone, PA, Ken & Deb Stewart of Bloomsburg, PA, Gary and Teresa Stewart of Golden, Colorado, Karen and Dan Maes of Lakewood, Colorado and Keith Stewart of Guam; Grandchildren - Brent, Brad, Shelby, Sara, Jon, Katie and Ben; Four Siblings - Wayne Stewart, Robert Stewart, Marilyn Henry, and Kay Platt
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Helen Schick, and his brother James (Jack) Stewart.
Visitation will be at Bennett and Houser Funeral Home, 312 E. Locust St., Clearfield Pa. on November 2nd from 6pm to 8pm. Funeral services will be held at the Clearfield Alliance Church, 45 Alliance Road, Clearfield, PA 16830 on Saturday, November 3, 2018. Services will begin at 11am with a viewing beginning at 10 am before service. Rev. Robert Goldenberg will officiate. Burial will follow in Crown Crest Cemeteries in Hyde, PA. Military honors will be accorded by the Clearfield Honor Guard.
