Dr. Butler was born in Mobile, Alabama on April 18, 1956 to the late Carson Butler Jr. and the late Mary Cole Butler. He is also preceded in death by his sister Judith Morton Butler and grandson Donovan Jason Butler.
Dr. Butler’s father was in the Airforce and the family eventually settled in Hampton, VA where he spent most of his childhood until he graduated from Hampton High School and joined the US Army. He was a 24-year Veteran of the US Army, starting service as an E2 Corpsman. He advanced to serve as a licensed nurse, then a physician’s assistance, and eventually advanced to service as a Doctor of Emergency Medicine. Upon his military retirement, he served as an Emergency Department Physician at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, North Carolina where he served until retiring in 2014.
Dr. Butler enjoyed all aspects of life. He set his faith and family above all other things in life. He adamantly served his family and showed his love through generosity and action. He had a heart for service which was exhibited not only through his military service, but also through medical missions to Honduras and Haiti. And among all the service, he never forgot to have fun, most notably enjoying time spent at the beach or adventuring to various sites of historical significance.
He is survived by his three sons, Jason Richard Butler, Nicki Robert Butler and Jared Michael Butler; grandchildren, Midian Fate Butler, Melanie Grace Butler, Jacob Carson Butler, Anna Catherine Butler, Elizabeth Mary Butler and Natalie Quinn Butler; sister, Deborah Ann Butler; and former spouse Susan Cowan Butler.
