A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 2pm at the Clayton Civitan Club, 340 McCullers Street, Clayton, North Carolina. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Dick was born in Pitt County on February 21, 1953 to the late Ted Tenny Baumgartner and the late Florence Gabriel Baumgartner.
He graduated in 1971 from Grainger High School in Kinston, NC and he attended North Carolina State University where he studied engineering.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Pamela Lipscomb Baumgartner; his children William Baumgartner of Killeen, TX (Grandchildren, Caiden and Gunner), David Baumgartner and wife Amber of Arapahoe, NC (David and Ayden), and Olivia Amara and husband Joseph of Clayton, NC (Noah, Alden, and Eliza); brother Tom Bumgarner and wife Dede of Clayton, NC; sister-in-law Sara Baumgartner of Alliance, OH; as well as numerous beloved nieces, nephews and in-laws.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother Robert Baumgartner of Alliance, OH; sister Sara Harrell and brother-in-law Percy Harrell of Snow Hill, NC.
Dick worked in business, construction management, and sales, including most recently selling Amsoil. In the last few years he was instrumental in remodeling several downtown buildings and building his daughter’s home. In his younger years, Dick enjoyed water skiing, riding the three-wheeler, and shagging to beach music. He loved supporting the local community through the Civitan Club, of which he was a member since 1985, serving as president from 1988-1989. He also served as the Friends of the Library President in Clayton from 1986-1990. Dick cared deeply about giving back to his community and never refused to help a friend in need. Dick enjoyed working on cars, watching Fox News, going to drag car races, being Mr. Fix-It for his family, and watching various local sports, but most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
His love for his family was evident by his countless hours spent cooking meals including Sunday morning breakfast, spaghetti, and chili. Dick’s famous breakfast casserole on Christmas morning and turkey at Thanksgiving will surely be missed. When you visited Dick, you never left his kitchen hungry.
He was affectionately known as “Grilldaddy” by his grandchildren with whom he spent countless hours playing tic-tac-toe and dice, going for rides to the pond, and always sneaking them ice cream, cookies, or gummies.
