A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
She was born January 29, 1947, in Henderson County, North Carolina to the late John Columbus Laughter, Sr. and Ruby Smith Laughter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her niece Amanda Hope, and brother-in-law Charlie Neighbors.
Becka was a graduate of UNC Greensboro with a Master’s Degree in Education. She taught and touched many lives at Northeast Guilford High School, Greensboro Middle College, Alamance Community College, and Johnston Community College. She enjoyed writing, gardening, the beach, Broadway shows, NC State Basketball, creating, tomato sandwiches, planning celebrations, and bringing the Bek!
She is survived by her husband, Steve Powers; brothers and sisters, John Laughter (Donna), Melinda Neighbors, Sharon Barbour (Joe) and the real loves of her life, her nieces and nephews; Kyle Barbour (Alison) Lauren Neighbors, Connor Barbour, Hope Barbour, Tori Neighbors, Hunter Davis, and the littles; Benjamin and Julia Barbour. She was always involved in their lives, immediately becoming Aunt Bek to all she met. Bek also loved her feline babies and helped foster and support many animal rescues.
A born and bred Mountain girl, Bek made sure to pass her heritage on to the younger generations. This mountain legacy can be seen in the books and short stories she wrote and published. “Mountain people were strong stock and didn’t give up” and neither did she. Bek was a well-educated, completely involved, unique personality. Affectionally known as Mama P, by the Powers Players, her love for former students, friends and family knew no limits. She was a champion of the underdog and worked tirelessly for charities of all kinds. She was an educator, a mentor, an author, and loved a good debate. She shared her light, generosity, loyalty, passion, knowledge, enthusiasm, creativity, empathy, compassion, and love, unconditionally. The world has lost a bright light.
