Philip Frank Johnson, a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, passed away on September 3, 2024, due to Covid Pneumonia. The son of Frank Broadhurst Johnson and Ruby Barnes Johnson, Philip Frank Johnson grew up in Selma, NC. He was born on December 17, 1949, in Durham, NC, and attended Selma High School.
At the age of 17, Philip Frank Johnson enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He valued this service highly. As part of this service, Philip participated in launch and recovery operations for Apollo 15 with Task Force 140 aboard the amphibious landing ship USS Austin east of Cape Kennedy. His ship, supporting her fourth Apollo mission, was stationed approximately 520 miles east of the launch site to recover the astronauts and their command module. After leaving the service, he worked at College Park RV, then sold insurance for Combined Insurance, and finally retired in 2019 from Flowserve Corporation.
Philip Frank Johnson is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda Scott Johnson; daughter, Lisa Johnson Lewis and her husband, Jason; and grandchildren, Drake Lewis, Mariyah Lewis, Jake Lewis, and Blake Lewis. He is also survived by sisters, Gail Ingram, Patricia Gerrell, Sherry Dixon, and brother Dwight Johnson. He is preceded in death by his brother, Gary Johnson. His loved ones will remember him for his compassionate heart, sense of humor, and love of his country. A service honoring the life of Philip Frank Johnson will be held at McLaurin Funeral Home in Clayton on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at 2:00pm. The family will receive friends and family on Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00pm at McLaurin Funeral Home.
