CLAYTON – Parthenia Hood Suggs, age 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at Wake Med in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Thursday, October 14, 2021 in the chapel of McLaurin Funeral Home with Reverend Michael Martin, Sr. and Reverend Dr. Alvin D. Thompson, Sr. officiating. Entombment will follow at the mausoleum of Pinecrest Memorial Park in Clayton.
Mrs. Suggs, affectionately known as Pat, was born April 13, 1930 in Clayton to the late Thomas Waymon Hood, Sr. and the late Pearl Williams Hood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters Josephine Archibald Edwards and Jessie Pauline Thigpen.
Mrs. Suggs was educated at Cooper High School and Shaw University before moving to Washington, D.C. where she and her family made their home for many years. In 1976 they returned to Clayton, where she lived out the rest of her years. She would say that she was one of ‘Pearl Hood’s daughters’, moving through her community as a polished, well-mannered woman with a strong faith in God who loved to laugh but would not hesitate to call it like she saw it.
Pat Suggs absolutely loved to visit and to chat on the phone with her sisters and cousins, sewed much of her own clothing, and canned delicious pickles and pear preserves. She was so indispensable to her departments at Cutter (Bayer/Talecris/Grifols) Labs that she retired three times before they finally let her leave. Pat was passionate about being of service. Whether visiting the sick, or delivering donated hot meals to a needy family, or helping her friends pick and sell their strawberries, or working in the food pantry at the church, everyone could count on Pat Suggs.
Mrs. Suggs is survived by her loving husband of 64 years John Robert Suggs; her sisters Bettie Louise (Otis) Williams and Shirley H. Bass, brother Thomas W. (Ruby) Hood, Jr.; son Kevin Robert Suggs, god-daughter Yolanda D. McGill; grandson Collin Robert (Vicky) Suggs; her nieces Renita Thigpen Calhoun, Claretta Hill, Jocelin McElderry; her nephews Kenneth Williams, Selwyn Thigpen, Dwan Thigpen, Charlton Stukes, Xavier Bass, Mark Bass; and a host of cousins and other relatives and friends.
