Miriam Sutton Adams was born September 18, 1934 in Sampson County to Hubbard and Fannie Sutton. She graduated from Piney Grove High School, received her BS and Masters from East Carolina Teachers College in Elementary Education. She taught in Maryland, Benson, Hobbton and Clayton. She was active in Johnston County NCAE in which she served as District President. She retired from teaching in 1983 due to health reasons. Miriam was active in the Clayton Woman’s Club for several years, serving as President from 1992-1994 and 1998-2000. An avid reader, she was a member of the Halcyon Book Club for over 30 years. She served faithfully at Horne Memorial Church in the choir, Sunday School and Nell Holland Circle. Her favorite past times included snuggling with her dog, “Tyler”, gardening, making flower arrangements for birthdays, weddings and community events, and cooking for her family. With multiple family birthdays in any given month, it was Miriam’s delight to cook each person his or her own individual cake resulting in one month having seven individual cakes! Beloved by her eight grandchildren, she spent many hours teaching them how to make homemade cakes and jelly and Sunday dinners. Forever the teacher, she tutored them and watched over their studies. She was an expert shopper; it was her delight to shop Belk, Kohls and Steinmart for the best sales and deals. After 30 years of fighting health issues, Miriam went to be with the Lord surrounded by family and friends. Her legacy is a family who loves her, students who admire her, a community who respects her and a church who will miss her. She is survived by her husband, Jeff Adams, children, Cynthia Ford and her partner Randy Holoman of Clayton, Anthony Adams and wife Paula of Chapel Hill, Bryan Adams and his wife, Kelli of Conway, South Carolina, and grandchildren, Adam, Alexandra, Graham, Grace, Maria, Robin, Diana and Ava. In addition she is survived by her brother, Morris Sutton and his wife, Roberta of Richmond, VA, her sister Helen King of Pinehurst, NC and her sister-in-law, Joyce Warren of Newton Grove, NC. She was preceded in death by her brother, Vernon Sutton and brother-in-law, Earl King.
