Janie Maxine Smith died peacefully in her sleep April 11, 2018 at Springbrooke Nursing and Rehab Center in Clayton, NC. She was born February 14, 1921 in Clayton to Mable and Sam Ellis and remained a lifetime resident. Maxine was married to Leon Hallie Smith on June 4, 1942 and was employed by Annie V’s Flower shop for many years as bookkeeper and florist. She was known for making beautiful bows and bridal bouquets. She was a lifelong and dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Clayton. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mother was an avid cross word puzzle enthusiast as long as she was able. She loved to watch birds and butterflies. Her family would like to thank the staff, nurses and CNA’s at Springbrook who took such good care of her.
Preceded in death by her husband, Leon Hallie Smith, She is survived by, brother, Russell Ellis, sister in law, Betty Hickman. Children, Jackie Smith, Frances Sykes (John), Kay Earp (Ron), Ricky Smith (Sherry). Grandchildren: Chris Sykes (Krystal), Kyle Sykes (Lori), Michael Sykes (Mollie), Will Earp (Karen), Sam Earp (Jennifer), Frankie Smith, Jessica Smith, Kyle Callam, great grandchildren, Halen Sykes (Lauren), Rhianna Sykes, Charlotte Sykes, Claire Sykes, Kenny Earp, Katie Earp, Hannah Earp, Josh Zeigler and lots of loving nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Monday, April 15th at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Clayton with visitation from 10:00 to 11:00. Interment to follow at Maplewood Cemetery. While flowers are welcome, memorial contributions may also be made to the First Baptist Church Organ Fund, 411 N. Fayetteville St., Clayton, NC 27528.
