Howard Langdon & Gladys Cusley Langdon

Gladys Evelyn Cusley was born August 21, 1933, to Kenneth and Gladys (Townsend) Cusley (both deceased) in Poughkeepsie, NY. Floyd Howard Langdon, Jr. (Howard) followed two weeks later, on September 7, 1933, to Floyd (Sr.) and Dorothy (Shook) Langdon (both deceased) in Fishkill, NY. Gladys was an only child while Howard was the eldest with three siblings: Patricia Ann Lease (husband Anthony – both deceased), Roderick Langdon (wife Philomena – both deceased) and Daniel Langdon (wife Carol – Daniel deceased).

Howard and Gladys met at Wappingers (NY) Central School, graduated from high school in 1951 and were married on March 14, 1953, right before Howard was inducted in the regular Army while serving in the reserves. Howard was discharged in May 1955 with Gladys pregnant with their first child. Starting in June 1955, Howard and Gladys had five children: Nancy Marie Langdon, David Mark Langdon (wife Linda), Peter Allen Langdon (wife Donna), Eric Howard Langdon (partner JerriLynn) and Sue Lynn Hanna (husband John).

After leaving the Army, Howard worked for IBM until his retirement in 1999 while Gladys was a full-time housewife. After the youngest graduated from college, Gladys received a bachelor’s (Meredith College) and master’s degree (UNC) in social work. Through their later years they spent much of their time traveling, sometimes with one of their grandchildren.

At the time of his death, Howard and Gladys had been married 67 years. Floyd Howard Langdon, Jr died peacefully in his sleep on October 22, 2020, at the age of 87. Gladys Evelyn Langdon also died peacefully in her sleep on August 12, 2024.

Howard and Gladys are survived by their 5 children, 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and Howard’s sister-in-law, Carol.

A memorial service for Howard and Gladys will be held at 11AM on September 21 by Pastor Nancy Petty at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, 1801 Hillsborough St. Raleigh, NC 27605.
