Joe proudly served his country as a Boatswain's Mate First Class in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Over the course of 13 years, he served in various combat areas and was recognized for his bravery and commitment with numerous military honors. These included the Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Bronze Star with Combat V—testaments to his courage and steadfastness under fire.
Following his military service, Joe continued to serve his community through a long and steady career at the United States Postal Service. For 35 years, he worked diligently at the post office—a role that reflected his reliability and strong work ethic.
Beyond his professional life, Joe found joy in a wide array of hobbies that brought him closer to those around him. He had a passion for square dancing—not only participating but also teaching others this rhythmic art form. His love for building model airplanes and collecting stamps spoke to his patience and attention to detail. He also delighted in building Legos with his daughter and granddaughters—moments filled with laughter and creativity that they will always cherish.
Evenings often found Joe watching Jeopardy! or Wheel of Fortune—shows that matched well with his dry sense of humor and sharp mind. His wit was subtle but ever-present, offering levity and warmth to those fortunate enough to share time with him.
Joe was deeply loved by his family. He is remembered by his daughter Gina Bera (Andrew Harmless) of Clayton, North Carolina; and by his granddaughters Audrey, Alaina, and Addison Harmless of Clayton. Their lives were enriched by his presence—his quiet strength a constant source of comfort.
He was preceded in death by his father Dimas J. Bera of Peoria, Illinois; and his mother Mabel C. Bera (Lnu).
Among the many memories he leaves behind is a quote he once shared: “Don’t cry when I am gone, because living isn’t forever. But we will be together forever one day.” These words reflect the enduring love he held for those closest to him—a love that transcends time.
May Gerald D. "Joe" Bera’s memory bring peace to all who knew him and continue to inspire those who carry forward his legacy of service, humor, and heartfelt connection.
