Our beloved Doris Hamlett took her spiritual flight on Friday morning, December 1, 2023, to meet her heavenly Father. She was born in Person County Roxboro, NC, to the late Elizabeth and Stephen Hamlett and was the youngest of fourteen children.
Doris relocated to New York, to live with her siblings, and there she met Keevie L Hooks Jr. They married soon after and settled in Roosevelt, NY. They attend First Church of God in Far Rockaway Queens, with their five sons, Edward, Ernest, Eric, Keevie, And Everette Hooks. Doris’ love for the church Grew as she became 1st Lady of United Community Church of God in Laurelton, Queens. She loved every opportunity to teach youth Sunday school and singing in the Choir. She also loved baking and was well known for her delicious sheet cakes and pies. She furthered her education at Adelphi University, which gave her great opportunities at Avis Rent A Car. She was influential in every single role.
Doris relocated to Va Beach, where she decided to utilize her love of driving and started working for HRT bus Transit around the Va Beach Area. She received several top awards for her exceptional driving and leadership abilities. Her riders frequently referred to her as “A Ray of Sunshine.” During this time Doris was a member of Joynes Road Church of God in Hampton, VA where she served as the Superintendent for Sunday School, the Pastor of Prayer Ministry, and the Nursing Home Ministry.
In search of change, Doris relocated to Clayton NC, where she continued as a bus operator for First Transit on the Wolfline for NC State University. There she created her own style of transit ministry, influencing & encouraging staff, and students. Doris’s beautiful spirit washed everyone she met, but she was especially honored to touch the hearts of the youth. Many of whom stayed connected and sought out her advice years after graduating. She was a Member of New Providence Church of God in Fuquay Varina, where she was a part of the Senior Choir.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, and 10 Sisters and Brothers.
She leaves to mourn her five sons: Edward Hooks (Tina), Ernest Hooks, Eric Hooks (Donna), Keevie Hooks III (Tamesha), Everette Hooks (Niya). Four grandchildren, Stephen (Edward’s son), Kevon and Kamilah (Keevie III’s kids) and Janiya (Everette’s daughter) as well as God Son Lawerence Troutman.
Her siblings Author Hamlett, Joyce Smith, Gladys Wilson, and of course a host of nephews, nieces, and cousins.
As Doris would always say, I love you more and there’s nothing you can do about it!
