Beverly Adell Matthews, of Clayton, passed away on December 1st at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC. She was born in Holly Springs to W. Raldy and Emma Frances Hare Matthews on December 15, 1931. She went to school at Fuquay-Varina and later attended Women's College in Greensboro, NC.
Her career began in Dallas, Texas as an airline stewardess. She later worked as a real estate broker and for many years a court stenographer with the County of Dallas. She ended her professional career as an administrator with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Connecticut.
Upon retirement in 2000, she returned to North Carolina and settled in Clayton. She quickly found a loving home at First Baptist Church and especially enjoyed the Fidelis Ruth T. E. L. Sunday School Class and the Senior Group. In pursuit of other activities, she enrolled at Johnston Community College in horticulture and computer science courses. She found much enjoyment in growing flowers, container gardening, and enhancing computer skills.
In addition to her parents, Beverly is preceded in death by sisters, Dorothy Hornady and Imogene Holton, as well as a brother, Edward Carlton Matthews. She is survived by sisters, Katherlee Gordon of Greensboro and Reba Willard of Myrtle Beach, numerous nieces and a nephew.
Visitation will be held at McLaurin Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 5, at 1 pm. A Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving, led by Dr. Mark T. White, will follow at 2 pm. Entombment will be at Pinecrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Baptist Church, 411 N. Fayetteville Street, Clayton, NC 27520.
The family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Dr. White and members of First Baptist Church for the many acts of kindness extended to Beverly over the last six months. Appreciation is also extended to the staff of Springbrook Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and to the many doctors and nurses at Johnston Memorial UNC Hospital who so lovingly cared for her.
