A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 2, 2022 in the chapel of McLaurin Funeral Home, 12830 US 70 Business Highway West, Clayton, North Carolina 27520, with Mr. Steve Naum presiding over the service.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service.
Barry was born in Elmira, New York on June 5, 1970 to loving parents Gerald Hewitt and Charity Thomas Hewitt.
Barry met his future wife Ellen Mitchell, while living in New Jersey in 1991. Soon after, they relocated to NC where they married and made their home. Barry was a loving and amazing man who deeply loved every member of his family. He was a hard worker and prided himself on being a good provider and a supportive son, brother, husband, father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Harold Hewitt Sr., Marjorie Waytena Hewitt, George Thomas, Beatrice Thomas; uncle’s, Harold Hewitt, Jr., George Thomas, Jr.; and his father-in-law, Felix Mitchell Jr.
Barry worked in a managerial position at Food Lion for over 25 years, however he was most recently employed at Maverick Transportation, where he was able to spend his days doing a job that he absolutely loved. He also enjoyed the love of family, golfing, working on cars with his son, riding his Harley motorcycle and driving through the scenic roads of the United States and Canada.
In addition to his parents Gerald and Charity, he is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ellen Mitchell Hewitt; two daughters, Felice Ann Gwinn and son-in-law, Danny Gwinn and Rebecca Hewitt; one son, Justice Hewitt; two granddaughters, Ella Rose Hewitt, Sutton Grae Hewitt and another beautiful grandchild on the way; two brothers, Jerry Hewitt and Cary Hewitt; one sister, Teri Ann Schwartz and brother-in-law, Doug Schwartz; two aunts, Millie Minton and Dolly Bowers; two nieces, Logan Schwartz and Sydney Schwartz; one nephew, Joshua Schwartz.
He is also survived by his two brothers-in-law, David Mitchell and Scott Mitchell; two sisters-in-law, Pat Mitchell and Carol Mitchell; mother-in-law, Annie Evans Mitchell; a nephew, Charles Mitchell; a niece, Jessica Mitchell; and a great niece, Lain Mitchell.
Barry was a wonderful man who was and will always be loved beyond words and greatly missed.
