After high school he enlisted in the Army, serving during the Occupation of Japan. He later enlisted in the Air Force and after 20 years of faithful service to his country he retired from the military in 1969 after earning the Air Force Longevity Medal with 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He also worked for and retired from General Telephone Co. after another 20 years. He was a member of the Circleville Church of the Nazarene.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Lucille, Edith, Mildred, Pearl and Dorothy Mae; brothers, Lawrence, Gene; and a great grandson, Bentley Long.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Janet Russell Carter, daughter Terry Lynn, sons Mark (Tracey), Steve (Cathy), sister Helen Bay and brother Darrell Carter. grandchildren, Tina (Jared) Stucki, Renee ( Jon) Glover, Kyle (MaJoanna) Greenwood, Jacob Carter, Jared (Allison) Carter, Brenda ( Michael) Baker, Barbara Herrel, Brandy (Michael) Long, and Justin Carter; and 18 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 1 from 4-7 p.m. and again Saturday, March 2 from 10-11 a.m with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. at Defenbaugh-Wise-Schoedinger Funeral Home at 151 East Main St. Circleville 43113. Internment will be at the Jackson Township Cemetery with Military Honors rendered by AMVETS Post 2256.
