Jane Kelley Vance, one of the first residents of Vantage House Retirement Community in Columbia, MD, died Saturday, June 9th. She lived for 11 years at Vantage House until she died at the age of 84. She volunteered for many positions there, and was twice elected as the President of the Board of the Vantage House Residents Association. She was an avid duplicate bridge player, a music and theater lover, and she strongly supported the Eden Alternative which brought birds, kittens and other animals into the residential community. She was devoted to her small poodle, Chloe.
Mrs. Vance was a volunteer for all her adult years. Among her many community activities, she was a Trustee of Concord Academy in Concord, MA, and a founding Director of the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA. Later, when New College was established in Sarasota, Florida, she was a founding member of the New College Library Association, serving as the first President of its Women's Committee.
She was born in Cambridge, MA, and her parents were the late Anne P. and Edmund S. Kelley. She was married for 46 years to the late Lewis Alexander Vance, M.D.
Survivors include two daughters, Jane McCauley of Columbia and Easton, MD, and Phebe Vance of Washington Island, WI, and a son, Lewis Alexander Vance, Jr. of Melbourne, FL; nine grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
Private services will be conducted on Monday, June 11, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, and a memorial service will be held at Vantage House for the residents and their guests. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Jane Kelley Vance Memorial Fund, c/o Vantage House, 5400 Vantage Point Road, Columbia, MD 21044.
