At an early age, Roddie made a public profession of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ at a Billy Graham Crusade in Imperial Beach.
He attended Silver Strand Elementary, Emory Elementary, Southwest Junior High, and Montgomery High School where he excelled in music (baritone, trombone, bass) and basketball (#31).
After a brief stint in the military, he continued his education at Associated Technical College where he received a degree in telecommunications. This education led to the start of his career with the government. He was employed by RCA Government Services, Digital Wizards, and COLSA Corporation where he was a Principal Engineer. His work as a defense industry contractor took him to many foreign countries where he was often mistaken for a celebrity. In earlier years he was mistaken for Michael Jordan but in later years (to his chagrin) Morgan Freeman.
On July 4, 1984 Roddie and Val began their journey together. They exchanged marriage vows in the presence of God, family, and friends on October 14, 1994. Their home was a place where Roddie could indulge his many passions including his love of family and friends, shopping with his daughters, creating and recording music with his son, gardening, and cooking (especially birthday cakes). He also loved jogging and bicycling on the beach.
Roddie loved young people as evidenced by his many years coaching with Pop Warner and Youth Football leagues. Not only was he their coach, but a friend as well who continued to support the players through high school and beyond.
He touched the lives of many people with his smile, generosity, and sense of humor and was one who never met a stranger.
Roddie Lee Walker III departed this earthly life on June 18, 2016 while traveling on business in Poland.
He was preceded in death by his father Roddie L. Walker Jr., his “sis” Tracy Walker, and his second Mom Margaret Cruz.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Valerie A. Walker, his beloved children - son Rolando (Cheryl) Walker and daughters Michelle (Andy) Leyva, Tricia (Carlos) Canela, Elizabeth King, and Raelina Walker; his goddaughter Erika (Jessie) Rubalcava, his mother Clara Walker; his brothers Richard Walker, Gregory (Wanda) Walker, and Darryl Campbell; and his sister Cheryl Walker. He was the world’s proudest Grandpa of eight grandchildren: Andrew, Olivia, Gabriel, Julia, Jayla, Kalilah, Isabella, and Isaiah; his lifelong second family the Calverts; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless other relatives and friends.
