John was born on June 10, 1946 to Tiny May and George Fellman Bowie in Saint Louis Missouri. Being the youngest of four brothers and two younger sisters, he was raised in a lively household surrounded by love and structure. He grew up closely with his cousins and loving grandmother :'Lola" or B.B. as she was called B.B. was at the helm of the family; lending out wisdom and discipline, followed by homemade pies (the stories were numerous).
After graduating high School, John had two jobs, but his passion was cars and clothes! Called upon for active duty he found he was on the list for Marines and quickly joined the US Navy. He went to Recruit Training Command in January 1966. John advanced his career through school and dedication. He was then tasked to submarine repair drydock which landed him on the East Coast, West Coast, Holy Loch Scotland, Rota Spain, and La Maddalena Italy.
On his last tour in Scotland, he met his Scottish Lass, Lynda. She joined him in Washington state in November 1981, a month later they were married in December 1981. Moving to San Diego, their first son Michael was born in '85 followed by their second son Ross in '87 while stationed in Italy.
John retired from the Navy in November 1994 after serving 28 years with the title of Chief Warrant Officer 03. Being only 48 years old and trying four different jobs he went back to school. John was then hired by UCSD to be their hazmat and safety engineer, furthering his career for another 15 years and retiring at 67.
John's passion was woodworking and music, R&B Soul and Smooth Jazz. He also enjoyed home improvement projects; teaching the boys age appropriate skills, they were his woodworking and home improvement buddies despite their annoyance at having their weekends disrupted. The boys acquired many of his skills which they use today. An avid scotch connoisseur, you could find John with a drink in hand after a long day of work. He was a great cook and enjoyed grilling; especially weekend family cookouts.
John leaves behind his loving wife Lynda of 41 years, sons Michael and Ross, two wonderful daughter in laws Tedayshia and Lita, his two beautiful granddaughters Makayja and Amani, his sister Mary Kat Bowie and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
John sadly passed at home on January 14th from Alzheimer's. Having dealt with it in its advanced stages since 2019 with loved ones close by.
