Being coached by his Dad and Mr. Steve Cowan, Jerry excelled in baseball, but football was his favorite sport. He began in Pop Warner, played in high school at Samuel F.B. Morse as quarterback where many of his records from 1977 still stand, and continued on to play semi-pro ball.
Jerry grew up in a tight-knit neighborhood where life-long relationships were formed. The kids attended school together, swam, played basketball, roller skated, camped in the neighborhood canyons, shot rabbits, went horseback riding, and fished. Jerry learned about country life while visiting his grandparents, Jerry and Margaret Brooks in Mississippi.
After high school, Jerry enlisted in the Army. He was trained to be a mechanic, yet was sent to the jungles of Central America to fight the enemy, snakes, monkeys, even a jaguar. He never went camping again after leaving the Army. Jerry also boxed during his career in the Army seeing a lot of the world with his team.
Upon leaving the Army, Jerry married Robyn Bolden and raised two sons: Gavin and Rian Brooks. Jerry loved his sons passionately. Even while working two jobs, he made time to teach them to fish, cook, play baseball, swim, and shoot guns. He helped coach them in track & field and football. Jerry realized it was important to teach them to speak well and dress appropriately for each occasion, just as his brother Hermon and friend Rudy taught him.
As far as careers, Jerry worked for the City of San Diego as a Motor Sweeper Operator, retiring in 2018 with 35 years of service. He earned a reputation for being hard working, caring, outspoken, and funny.
The last 14 years, Jerry shared his life and love with his wife, Susie Brooks. They met at the City of San Diego and were rarely apart enjoying hot air balloon rides, glider rides, restaurants, movies, shopping, raising his dog, Cody, and visiting family and friends. Faith, family, and friends have always been the most important aspects of Jerry's life. No doubt he is smiling down upon all of us right now.
Jerry is survived by his wife: Susie Brooks; sons: Gavin and Rian Brooks; brothers: Errol and Hermon Brooks; sister: Paulette Brooks; daughter-in-law: April Brooks; grandchildren: Dante and Kaliyah Turner and Zakai Brooks; and a large beloved extended family too numerous to list.
