James, a long-time resident of San Diego, was born in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, to Dr. James I. and Ethel Knott. He graduated valedictorian from San Diego High (1952), and later from the School of Dentistry at Washington University, St. Louis. Post-graduation, James served honorably for two years in the Air Force with the1501st Air Base Group at Travis AFB.
James was a fixture of the San Diego community, practicing dentistry at his North Park office for over 35 years, serving as an esteemed member of the local Lions Club for over 50 years, and past-President of the Horseshoe Club of Balboa Park. He was affectionately known for his eccentric style and humor as reflected by his front yard filled with every type of windmill imaginable earning him the unofficial title of the Whirligig Man of North Park. James loved to travel the world, visiting all seven continents in his lifetime. His love of butterflies and plumeria will never be forgotten.
James is preceded by the loves of his life Jennie Lou Knott, Wilma C. Knott, Hisako Coox, his brother Sam, and daughter Patty. He is survived by his siblings Joe (Carol), Jean, and Julia; his children James A., Glendon (Kim), Kenneth (Tanja), Jennifer (Tom), Steven (Vicky), Kristi (Don); 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and extended family.
A celebration of life will be held at The Heights Golf Club in Rancho Bernardo on 02-May-2025, from 2-5 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the San Diego Zoo to help atone for many of ‘Jimmy’s’ alleged youthful shenanigans (apologies to Mr. Baboon and Mr. Emu).
