Below is an excerpt taken from a newspaper article about Ed Tracy and his restaurant Ed's Place.
"Long before Ed’s Place and the Dutch Coffee Shop, Ed worked in delivery to restaurants in the 1970’s. He got to know many in the industry. A man he came to admire was Chef Patrick Rand. The chef worked at Sierra La Verne Country Club, and they struck up a friendship. One Thanksgiving, times were tough, Ed didn’t know how he was going to get a meal to his family. Chef Patrick insisted Ed bring his family to the country club and he would make sure they got fed. Chef Patrick gave Ed passion, hope, and inspiration While they were enjoying their meal Ed’s mother asked Chef Patrick how he could do what he did and Chef Patrick held his arm across his chest and his hand over his heart and said, “Because I cook from the heart.” His eyes and expression said it all. Ed remembers that as an inspirational moment. One he will never forget, and he began to tear up. He put his hand to his heart as he repeated the words,” Because I cook from the heart"."

I met Patrick in 1995 at TGI's restaurant and bar, and we became friends immediately. I told him at that time that he was a bon vivant, someone who absolutely loved life and food and celebrating all of that with his friends. I lost touch with him a few years ago, and happened upon this by accident when I was looking for a way to contact him. Patrick was a life force and one of the best friends that I've ever had, and losing him is unexpected and so very sad.

I met Patrick in 7th grade. We both grew up in Downey. I just heard the sad news on Saturday and shared it with his good friends from high school.  We are all deeply saddened by this. We had kept in touch with Patrick for all these years up until about 8 years ago.  He was loved for so many things.  His cooking his laugh and his enthusiasm for great music.  He touched so many people with those things.  A favorite memory of mine is how I ran into him at a DEVO concert in Santa Barbara once. The band were friends of mine. I introduced him to them which led to him cooking a meal for them.  That blended his love for music  food and laughter.   Everyone was thrilled with that.  More coincidences than I can list here.  I am shocked and sad that he left. He will be missed.  We lost a beautiful and unusually special man.

I just learned about Patrick passing away a couple days ago...Have always asked about him after he left the Central Coast - he touched my life forever for being real, raw, honest, messed up as all hell, talented, awake, anti-establishment and so much more.

I was Patrick’s neighbor and friend. I’ll never forget how kind and caring he was with my father before he passed away. He would sit and talk with my dad at Mr D’s, then make sure he made it home ok. He helped me a long my Christian walk and always gave me positive words of encouragement. Patrick, my friend, you’ll be missed. Thank you for blessing me and my family with your presence. Until we meet again!!!

I was Patrick’s mother-in-law and we had some wonderful times.
I did the design work for his restaurant in Los Olivos...  
I always enjoyed his fabulous food and especially the mint hand made ice cream he made for my St Patrick’s Day birthday..  
Patrick was one of the most talented men I ever met!  He could speak several languages fluently, sing beautifully, and without a doubt, the best chef ever!  
You will be missed Patrick, and I wish you many blessings on your new journey into the afterlife!

I was married to Patrick and he was the best chef I've ever met.  We were divorced but we still stayed in contact talking on the phone sometimes for hours!  He taught me how to cook and I will always love him for that.  I will miss his laughter, wit and general fabulous mood.  He went through some turmoil but made it out the other side a better person.  He finally got to a great place in his life and is gone way too soon for me.  Save a place for me my friend I'll see you again!
