Martha passed in the home of her daughter Delia Gonzalez in Upland, CA, at the age of 77. She is the wife of the late Antonio (Tony) Melo. She was born on the Azorean island of Terceira in the city of Lajas on October 10, 1941.
She met her husband in Terceira and they were married in 1962 and gave birth to their first child Delia. They moved to the U.S and eventually settled down with the addition of four children George, Anna, Elizabeth and Kathy in Ontario, CA where they lived for 45 years. Martha worked for prominent attorneys in Upland, Mr. Porter and Mr. Covington as a housekeeper for 36 years, but she also raised animals in her home, including rabbits, chickens and lots of love birds and dogs.
Martha, along with her husband Tony, were long-time members of the Chino D.E.S Portuguese Hall. She always enjoyed attending different Festas, and the cultural atmosphere of her home country. Martha loved the Lord with all her heart and took joy in attending bible study at St. Margaret Mary’s Church in Chino, CA. She also attended St. Joseph Church in Upland, CA where she often participated in BINGO.
Martha is succeeded by her daughters, Elizabeth, Anna and Delia as well as 12 grandchildren, including Tyler, son of the late George Melo. She is also a great grandmother to three grandchildren, Sophia, Wyatt and Kristopher.
Her services will begin on Tuesday, May 28 at Funeraria Del Angel Chino at 6pm for viewing and following with a rosary at 6:30pm.
Martha’s mass will be held on Wednesday, May 29 at St.Joseph’s Church in Upland, CA at 11am with interment to follow at 12:30pm at Bellevue Memorial Park in Ontario, CA.
