Born in Landis, North Carolina on April 10, 1926, he was the son of the late Walter B. Corriher, Sr. (Jack) and Millie Frances Mabe Corriher.
Prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy February 10, 1944, Mr. Corriher had worked as a weaver in the cotton mill and had been employed by Johnston Furniture Co. in Kannapolis, North Carolina. After enlisting in the U.S. Navy February 10, 1944, Corriher, Walter Bell Jr. Sea2c 263 94 38 V-6 completed AVIATION MACHINIST MATE SCHOOL, NAVAL AIR TECHNICALTRAINING CENTER, NORMAN, OKLAHOMA; S1C AMM Corriher completed AVIATION FREE GUNNERY UNIT Whidbey Island, Washington; and F6F LINE MAINTENANCE COURSE, NAVAL AIR TECHNICAL TRAINING CENTER, MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE. Mr. Corriher served aboard the USS Lexington (CV-16) on her Third War Cruise and she was the first US Fleet Carrier to enter Tokyo Bay when World War II ended. His Honorable Discharge (February 24, 1946) stated the following: American Area Camp. – Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Camp Medal, Point System, and Victory Medal WWII. After returning home, he worked in his father’s cabinet shop, Ervin Construction Co., and Leonard Beaver Construction Co. until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by both his parents, his wife of 66 years, Loma Geneva Kirk Corriher, his son Chris Alan Corriher, his brother Johnny Bradford Corriher, and sisters, Faynell Scarborough, Margaret Freeze, Mildred Sloan, Sallie Frances and Fannie Mae Corriher.
Those left to miss him deeply and share many loved memories are his daughter Vickie Corriher Carpenter (deceased Rodger), his son Randy K. Corriher (Nancy Garver), grandchildren: Kristen Wise, Lauren Bouknight, Donna Cox, Tracy Yow, Matthew Corriher and Jeff Corriher, great-grandchildren; Tiffany Overcash, Heather Cox, Aaron, Molly, and Brandon Yow, Gavin Bouknight and Jordan, Brennen and Elijah Wise, great-great grandchildren; Abbie and Lydia Carter, Noah Overcash, Josh and Tessa Barringer.
A graveside service will be held in the mausoleum of West Lawn Memorial Park on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 11 AM with Pastor Steve Leigh bringing the message.
