Mrs. Dorothy Ann Thomas Freeze, age 93 of China Grove, passed away on Friday, January 29, 2021 at Best of Care in Kannapolis after a brief illness. Born February 13, 1927, Dot was the daughter of the late Charlie Cecil Thomas and Ethel Thelma Ridenhour Thomas. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Raymond William Freeze, her stepmother, Minnie Harwell Thomas; brothers, CC, Jr. and Davis Thomas; sisters, Margaret T. Barr and Jane T. Noggle. Dot was a graduate of Oakhurst High School and attended Carolina Business School in Charlotte.
Before marriage, Dot worked for Civil Service (CRRB) in Charlotte. After raising her four children and getting them in school, she worked as a Rowan County Assistant Register of Deeds, retiring in 1989 after 18 years of service. Until she became disabled, Dot was an active member of Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church and Sunday School. She loved helping plan trips and activities for the Happy Age Seniors. Unknown to most who knew her, music was an integral part of her life with her singing on the Grady Cole Radio Show in Charlotte until a tragic accident in 1949 ended her musical career. In her early years, she helped organize the first Girl Scout Troup and Weekday Church School at Mt. Moriah. She was also a Sunday school teacher and member of the Women of the ELCA.
Those left to cherish her memory are her four children, Anne F. Sebastian (Don), Cynthia (Cindy) F. Basinger (Jimmy) of Salisbury; Dale G. Freeze (Angie) of China Grove and Laird B. Freeze (Merri Jo) of Salisbury. She also leaves behind her 13 grandchildren, Matt Sebastian and Carrie S. Efird; Kim B. Stewart, Jamie, Katie and Drew Basinger; Derek Freeze, Ashley F. Chewning, Leslie F. DeBerry and Erin Freeze; Tim Freeze, Hannah F. Babcock and David Freeze. Also surviving her are 13 great-grandchildren; Jacob and Melina Sebastian; Lillian Freeze and Elaina DeBerry; Alec and Matt Stewart, Solle’i Basinger, Carter Crotts, Grayson Fox and Harley Basinger; Harrison Freeze, Ray and Mitchell Babcock along with her sister, Betty Helms of Raleigh.
Graveside service for Mrs. Freeze will be on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at 1:30pm at Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church Cemetery with Pastor Tim Kneuss presiding. The family has requested you honor their request for social distancing while attending the service and greeting family members. In lieu of flowers, they have requested you kindly remember Dot with memorials in her honor to Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church, 750 Mt. Moriah Church Road, China Grove, NC 28023.
