Don grew up in Spencer, NC and was the son of Walter P. and Dorothy Pierce Sebastian. After his mother's death at age 12, his beloved aunt, Virginia P. Grubb and her family moved into the home and helped to raise him.
Don was in the last class of graduates from Spencer HIgh School in 1958. While there he participated in several sports and excelled at football. He went on to attend Appalachian State and loved to tell of his many adventures during those 4 years. Don was very proud of his service to country in the Army Reserve, 991st T.C, heavy truck division.
After briefly working for Metropolitan Life and living in New York CIty and Charlotte, he returned to Spencer and worked at Proctor Chemical before starting a long career in sales at Piedmont Mills Supply, now Industrial Supply Solutions. While working there he met and then married, Anne Freeze on April 2, 1972. They celebrated 50 wonderful years until his death. They had two children while they lived in Spencer and attended Don's home church, Central United Methodist. Don was active there until the family moved to the China Grove area and began attending Mt. Moriah Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Don served as a Sunday School teacher, Council member as Vice Chairman, Lutheran Men Officer, and as finance committee chairman. He loved going to church even in the latter states of his disease.
As a younger man, Don enjoyed participating in Boy Scout Troop 361 and with the Spencer Jaycees, volunteering with the Spencer Fire Department, and serving as president of the Rowan Industrial Management Club and Thrivent Financial Piedmont Rowan Chapter. He continued to enjoy traveling with family and friends throughout his life.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brother, Richard P. Sebastian; step mother, Faith Beck Sebastian; and special aunts, Virginia P. Grubb and Julia P. Spear.
Those left to cherish memories of Don are his wife, Anne, whom he dearly loved; son Matt and wife Carmen Sebastian of Concord; and daughter Carrie and husband Dustin Efird of China Grove. Don loved his grandchildren; Jacob and Melina Sebastian and Beckham Efird. Don is also survived by special cousins; Robert Grubb, Libby Grubb Miller and Sam Spear as well as many nieces and nephews who will remember him for his crazy antics and tall tales of fighting in the war and playing football for the Redskins.
Anne would like to thank Trinity Living Center, Adult Daycare, for loving and caring for Don this past year. Also a special thank you to Best of Care Assisted Living and Hospice of Cabarrus County for providing placement and comfort during the last week of Don's life.
