David Kern, son of Claude and Mildred Kern, passed away peacefully on October 27, his wife Sandra by his side. David was born and grew up in Warminster, PA, and he loved playing football and baseball. He graduated Senior Class President from William Tennent HS in 1962. Dave attended the College of William and Mary, earning B.A. in 1966, and M.Ed. in 1968. It was there he met and married his surviving wife of 54 years, Sandra Kern.
As an ROTC cadet, David entered active duty with the Army Transportation Corp as a 2nd Lieutenant. In July 1969, he was stationed in Vietnam with the U.S. Army Transportation Division. It was during this service that David was exposed to Agent Orange, which contributed to the cancer and Parkinson’s Disease that David had been bravely fighting for the last 10 years.
David and Sandra moved to Salisbury in 2001. David began teaching 3rd grade at Cleveland Elementary School where he worked until his retirement. David was an active member of Millbridge Ruritan Club, and he was the head organizer the West Rowan County Blood Drive for 6 years. David was a member of Thyatira Presbyterian Church.
David is survived by Sandra, and their three children; Allison Kern Nevins, Craig Laurent and David Lee Kern, and his four grandchildren, Quentin, Edward, Celia and James Kern.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM – Monday, October 31, 2022 at Thyatira Presbyterian Church with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will speak to friends following the service.
