Billy D. Martin, 85 of Salisbury NC passed into a peaceful sleep to await the resurrection on Friday, October 21, 2016. Born in Calhoun County, Alabama ,on April 21, 1931, he was the son of the late Eunice Turman and Robert Lee Martin. Sr., who later moved their family to North Carolina. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margie W. Martin. They were married in November 1954. Also surviving are daughter Dawn Shores (Kelly), sons Darrell Martin (Debbie) and Donald Martin, and 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and 2 deceased great grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother Paul Martin and sister Velma Martin. In addition he is survived by his special grandchildren Chris and Jennifer Wright and children.
Billy especially loved to read. At home he always had a book in his hand. After high school graduation, he served four years in the US Navy during the Korean War. He was stationed in San Diego, Hawaii, Japan and Alaska with VP42 Squadron and the Sea Plane PBM Mariner. He was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church where he served on the church council, taught adult Sunday School class and was a charter scout master for Troop 315 and was youth leader. He retired after 30 years with the NC Highway Commission as the Bridge Department Supervisor for Rowan and Davie County.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 1:30 til 3:00 at Grace Lutheran Church with funeral following at 3:00 also at the church with Rev. Jermome Cloninger, minister. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.linnhoneycuttfuneralhome.com
