William Joseph Hastings

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William (Bill) Hastings, who left us on December 16, 2024, in Chilliwack, BC.

Born in 1942 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Bill's life was marked by hard work, resilience, and a dedication to family and community.

Bill began his career in the logging industry as a young man, displaying a strong work ethic and determination. He later transitioned to a career as a truck and bus driver in the Interior of BC and the Fraser Valley, where his reliability and dedication became widely respected.

Despite facing early life challenges, these experiences shaped Bill into a man of character and integrity, serving as an inspiration to all who knew him. Known for his gentlemanly demeanor and firm handshake, Bill was a beloved figure in his community. He worked for Cascade Charter and Fraser Valley Charter Service and enjoyed many years travelling BC, Alberta and NWT, often with Myrna at his side, as the driver for Jackson Tours. Doug Jackson remains a close and dear friend. He was especially proud of his years as the team driver for the Chilliwack Chiefs. Bill's unwavering dedication ensured that the players and staff rested easy, even as he skillfully navigated the treacherous storms of the North and Interior roads. Upon retirement, he continued to serve the Chilliwack Chiefs as a volunteer usher. In recognition of his dedicated service, the Chiefs organization invited Bill to participate in the banner-raising ceremony after their win in the 2018 Jr. “A” National championship RBC Cup. This was truly a proud moment and great honor for Bill.

Bill was an accomplished athlete in his younger years, excelling in fast ball and curling. He enjoyed watching all kinds of sports, with hockey, curling and Bluejays baseball being among his favorites. As a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous for several decades, he was a sponsor to many, providing unwavering support and friendship to those in need.

Predeceased by his father Joseph, mother Johanna and brother Dale, Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Myrna Lewis; his children, Tom (Rick) and Paige (Ian); stepchildren, Susan (Randall), Stephen (Suzie), and Bryce (Robyn); siblings Dorothy and Jerome. Bill's greatest joy in life was his granddaughters, Kirsty, Alexa, Tessa and Justyne, who brought him immense pride and happiness.

Bill spent his final days in the company of family members and friends, including his esteemed fraternity of bus driver colleagues, who have consistently gathered for coffee over the years. He was also pleased to have his sister Dorothy, niece Gail (Williams Lake) and brother Jerome (Edmonton) be with him in the weeks prior to his passing.

Bill’s family thanks the doctors and nurses, staff and volunteers of all the medical organizations that helped and assisted Bill through the last 12 months. Your care and compassion are unmatched and you are heroes in our eyes. Special thanks to the very caring nurses and volunteers of Cascade Hospice Chilliwack who comforted Bill in his final days.

A celebration of Bill's life will be held at a later date to honor his memory and the impact he had on his community. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Bill's name.

Bill's legacy is one of kindness, strength, and unwavering dedication to those he loved. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who were touched by his gentle spirit and his example of how to treat others with compassion and respect.

Rest in peace, Bill. Your journey on this earth may be over, but your spirit will continue to guide and inspire us all.
