Marlene my sincere condolences on the loss of Harold. I will always remember Harold as a kind and thoughtful man. I have lovely memories of family dinners at  Peter and Helen’s home.

Condolences to Marlene, Darlene, and families.  I’m sorry to be unable to attend the funeral.  I’m grateful that my siblings, Wendy and Gord, will be there representing my family. We all have treasured memories of being taken on our first ski trips by Harold and Marlene. So nice of them. I have a favourite memory of Harold. We were at the Evergreen Hall back in the 70’s for a large family event of some kind, and another group, made up of hippy looking people, was holding an event in a room nearby, some accidentally coming occasionally to our door in error. Returning to our room at some point I  saw Harold, grinning like a Cheshire Cat putting a sign up on the door. It said “No Bean Sprouts Here.” To me it was perfect Harold and it still makes me smile. May he rest in peace.

There are a few of us who will remember Harold as a teenager.  Alice, Jerry, & Clifford among them.  My earliest recollection of Harold was from when he was 16.  I was in a car with him & Bob and maybe one or two more.  Harold was a new driver and Bob referred to him as Rocky.  A name inspired by Rocky Marciano?  Maybe.  About that time the Harms family was no longer on Woodbine, but the next house after that., still in town.  In the basement Harold had set up weights for body building.  On the wall was a pin-up poster of Lili St. Cyr.  It was there that I heard Bill Haley and The Comets, Rock Around the Clock.

I can't remember how many times we were part of a Hiebert family picnic up at Cultus Lake.  I can say that years later, when I wanted to make potato salad, I did not need to consult a recipe.  The aunts had made so much that I knew the recipe by heart.
I remember that Harold was at university, and he and Dad would argue about evolution, Harold arguing for.  Years later Bob told me that in the car on their way back to UBC Harold would argue evolution with the man I later  knew as Mr. Hooge, a junior high school teacher.  Except that, in the car Harold would argue against evolution.
