Gertrude (Trudy) Berndt, surrounded by family, went to sleep peacefully on January 16, 2013 in the Chilliwack General Hospital at the age of 85. She will be lovingly remembered by her extended family -- stepson, Bob (Char) Hack of Salmon Arm; daughter Betty (Henry) Chretien of Penticton; son John (Brenda) Hack of Oliver; daughter Shirley (Will) Van Esch of Sechelt; and daughter Gwen (Eric) Jansen of Chilliwack; brother Henry Gerber of Surrey; brother Willi Gerber of Aldergrove; niece Dorothy (Bob) of Killaly, Saskatchewan. Also left to mourn her are -- grandchildren John (Ria), Bev (Vic), Kristina, Katie (Paul), Jennifer (Bud), Becky (Spencer), Felita (Gerry); Suzanne (Sakti), 9 great-grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces and many Hack family in-laws. Special to her heart was her youngest great-grandchild Jacob. Trudy was sadly predeceased by her husbands John Hack and Ed Berndt; her parents Jakob and Olga Gerber; sister Maria Hofmann; stepdaughter Elsa, son-in-law Ron and son Bobby.
Trudy was born in Czernowitz, Romania, in 1929. She survived WWII as a teenager in numerous displaced persons camps in Germany and then immigrated to Canada in 1951. She married John Hack in Chilliwack and became mom and confidant to his two teenage children Elsa and Bob. In 1961Trudy, John and their two young children, Betty and John, welcomed Elsa’s (Ron) 3 children, Shirley, Bobby and Gwen, into their family. Later in life Trudy entered the work force as a Home Support Worker. She was well loved by her clients and co-workers. She enjoyed helping her friends and family, gardening and preserving, listening to music, taking pictures, admiring flowers and telling stories of her life. In her last years she greatly enjoyed the help of her Home Support ladies, the friendships of her NetCare family and of her apartment-block community. She spent her life demonstrating unconditional love to her family, friends and strangers.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Sat, Feb 2nd, 2013 at 3 pm at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 46024 Riverside Drive, Chilliwack, BC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to 'NetCare Day Program--Life Enrichment Fund' in support of this wonderful initiative at Parkholm Place—or charity of your choice.
