Donald Thomas Martin, a legend of the Pitt River Valley, passed away on July 8 at home with his beloved wife Jeanie by his side. Don was born in Jasper, Alberta, and was 89 years old. He was predeceased by his parents Adam and Anne and his adored sister Linda. He is survived by his cousin Diane Turnbull (John, deceased) and Jean’s children Debra and Dale. Don had many friends and among his closest were Jimmie Russel, deceased (Bobby), Waldy Gaertner (Rosie, deceased), Travis Kuiper (Michelle), John Olafsen (Jan), Kris Rodin (Grace) and their children Dawson and Taylor.
A proud Scots, Don was a story teller like no other! A favourite opening was “Did I ever tell you the one about …” and would usually end with “… and that’s a true story!”. He was a larger-than-life personality and lived a full life from his upbringing in Jasper, his East Vancouver beginnings, his working years in Richmond, through to his retirement in his beautiful mountain home in Chilliwack. Don knew everyone and was always ready to talk and share a story and a laugh.
Don was a lineman for B.C. Tel and had many adventures climbing the tall poles and rallying his crew during a strike. He was a natural leader though he always claimed that being Number Two was better.
Hunting, fishing, and climbing the mountains were Don’s passions along with hockey. Don was a goalie and played for any team that needed one. He was an exceptional shot and fisher and was always eager to teach others as others had taught him. A perfectionist, he practiced until he was the best he could be. Don always had his cherished Black Lab at his side for hunting and as a loving companion. The camp he built at Pitt Lake with his own hands was his pride and joy.
Don was a longstanding member of Ducks Unlimited, the Kingfishers Club, and Associated Wildlife Reserves.
Don’s passing leaves a hole too large to fill. Forever in our hearts and a final toast with Woods rum to the master of Martin’s Manor.
