Predeceased by her birth mother Irma, her young son Dean, her parents Gordon and Betty Buchanan, and her brothers Ron and Brian, Carolyn is survived by her husband Denis (Shelley), son Paul (Krystal) and grandchildren Jacob, Jackson and Alexis, with whom she spent this wonderful Christmas; sisters Sue (Jerry) and Patty (Bruce); and nieces and nephews.
Born in High River, Alta., Carolyn grew up in Chilliwack, the eldest of five Buchanan children. Trained as a RN in Kamloops, Carolyn met and married Denis. They spent several years moving between B.C. and Alberta as Denis was transferred and promoted at Woodward’s stores; they eventually settled in Burnaby.
In 1986, Carolyn was head nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in New Westminster when a traumatic, debilitating illness put a halt to her career and rich social life. Though she was never able to work again and her health steadily deteriorated, Carolyn remained strong and resilient, never losing her sense of humour or zest for life. Even after her body let her down and she had to move into a care home, Carolyn’s bright spirit inspired us all.
She will be remembered with our deep love and affection.
A family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Cancer Society or BC Children’s Hospital would be appreciated.
